As long time co-workers, I had an opportunity to spend time talking to Ronnie about life outside of work and in his case, he mainly spoke about his kids, Barbara and his garden. I was always impressed with the admiration and love he had for Barbara...what a great thing to observe in a guy that intimidated the heck out of me when I first started working with him - something about that New York accent?? One year in particular, we must have both had abundant zucchini crops (although if you've ever planted zucchini, chances are you've had an abundant zucchini crop). Well, Ronnie said "Barbara's got a great recipe for zucchini patties - like a mock crab cake - do you want me to bring it in?" I said sure, it sounded good. Today, when I learned of Ronnie's death, I was reminded of these garden exchanges and checked my recipes - sure enough, there's the handwritten recipe from Barb Reinhardt labelled "Here's what's cookin'" Zucchini Patties. I've made it several times over the years and always smile in remembering the gruff guy I came to know as a smart, caring, compassionate, argumentative (although I learned to stand my ground) co-worker who strove to run an error-free department and who inspired those who worked with him to seek the same standards of excellence. He was the kind of co-worker everyone should strive to be. I am so sorry to learn of his passing and so grateful to have spent many hours in his company.
